The State of #OKlaed Teacher Shortage

The old saying "Talk is Cheap" is ever so true when discussing #oklaed Teacher Shortage. Many of us  started ringing the alarm bells concerning teacher shortage 4 years ago.   After many task forces, proposed legislation,  and the SDE joining the discussion we have done nothing, absolutely nothing, to keep Oklahoma kids from being taught by non certified teachers.  Let's examine the "Talk" of recent years concerning our shortage.

Task Force: I wish someone would share something that has been accomplished by the task force.  Looking at the membership, although filled with some very respectable individuals, I see a limited number of people truly feeling the effects of teacher shortage.  I always fear politics taking precedent over the good will of #oklaed.

Legislators: Some legislators support #oklaed, many more claim to.  Some legislators try to convince themselves and others how much they back education.  The rhetoric is sickening.  If Cost of living, benefits, admin pay,  and other perks were factored in Oklahoma teachers would be #1 in pay not #50.  All those teachers leaving the state just do not realize they are going to take a pay cut.  If the truth were told teachers all across the nation would be flocking to Oklahoma. Those of us in #oklaed know this is total "Bull" but we hear it, read it, and see it every day from our legislators. Not one legislator in office has ever voted on a teacher raise that became law.  "Nuff Said"

SDE: Becoming certified becomes more difficult every day.  We need to add teachers to the job market not decrease the number.  You need to work to improve the quality of teachers by making it easier to remove poor ones not making it more difficult to become licensed.  I have not seen one rule, recommendation, or proposed legislation that would have a long term positive effect on teacher shortage.

#oklaed: Professional Accountability is vanishing in our profession.  We defend the ineffective and ignore the superstars.   We need to add 1000s of teachers today but also have the ability to fire those who are not good for kids.  We preach to the choir but never call our legislators.  Telling our story has become more negative then celebrating our successes.  #PPF needs to become positive  post everyday.

What are you doing today, tomorrow, and next week to improve teacher shortage.
